Florida Deputy Sheriffs Association

Family Defender Plan

The Florida Deputy Sheriffs Association Enhanced Membership offers an extensive package of security including U.S. Legal Services Family Defender. The following will tell you more about the coverage you are provided with Family Defender.

Job-Related Legal Protection

On-Scene Attorney Representation
When on active duty as a law-enforcement professional for a Florida Sheriff’s Office, membership includes on-scene representation, within 2 hours, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for shootings and motor vehicle accidents resulting in serious injuries. You will be provided a phone number to your on-call attorney for initial consultation and then on-scene representation from a Network Attorney as requested by you.

Tragic Accident Representation
It’s your worst nightmare – a tragic accident resulting in loss of life, especially in the line of duty. Your Family Defender coverage will pay all the legal fees for your defense if you or a covered member of your family is charged with Manslaughter, Involuntary Manslaughter, Negligent Homicide or Vehicular Homicide on or off the job.

Administrative and Termination Hearing Representation
As an FDSA Enhanced Member, you will have available a total of 60 hours each membership year for administrative inquiries or investigations including pre- and post- disciplinary or termination inquiries, hearings or proceedings before a review board or arbitrator.

Preventive Legal Services

Consultations With Your Network Attorney
As an FDSA Enhanced Member, legal counsel is just a phone call away. You have access to your Network Attorney for personal, job-related and business advice on any legal subject matter either in office or over the phone. The Network Attorney will explain your rights under the law, point out options and recommend a course of action.

Phone Calls and Letters On Your Behalf
A letter or phone call from your Network Attorney can help you cut through red tape. You may receive an unlimited number of personal phone calls or letters each membership year – one phone call or letter per subject related matter – at no added cost.

Contract and Document Review
You may have an unlimited number of personal legal documents reviewed by your Network Attorney. Your Network Attorney will analyze documents, letters or any legal papers explaining your legal rights and advise accordingly before you sign.

Wills for You and Your Family
You may have a Will prepared for you by your local Network Attorney at no additional charge – not just a “simple” Will, but a comprehensive Estate Plan that meet the needs of you and your family – with free yearly reviews and updates.

Trial Defense Services
You and your spouse also have representation by your Network Attorney if either of you are a named defendant or respondent in a covered criminal or civil job-related action or off-the-job civil action filed in court.

IRS Audit Legal Services
Your Family Defender Plan takes the bite out of an IRS audit by providing coverage each membership year from your Network Attorney for either you, your spouse or your dependent children when notified in writing of an IRS audit, or requested to appear at the IRS about your personal tax return.

Financial Coaching
Building a “secure financial life” requires clarity, consistency, and commitment. Sometimes it helps to have someone in your corner. The individual, who invests the time and uses a Financial Counselor, will gain a concise, focused direction for a positive, simplified, yet significant financial future. You may have access to telephonic consultations with a Financial Counselor who will be able to consult on matters, including credit counseling, debt and budgeting assistance, tax planning, retirement, and college planning questions. These services are provided by seasoned financial professionals and licensed CPA’s.
